Gimme a flat white
When we were in New Zealand this past May, SJ and I (and our duck friend, Hercules) started every morning with a flat white, the “national coffee drink of NZ” – a shot of espresso with super hot, creamy steamed milk poured in. Sometimes with chocolate sprinkled on top. Sometimes not, as seen above.
Sounds like a latte. It’s not a latte. It’s better. Maybe it was the NZ milk. Maybe it was the pour. But by holy cheese, it was damn good everywhere we went. Creamy, rich, balanced, and even pretty. I have since tried to get my local Starbucks to make one, thinking their heavily-marketed switch to focusing on good coffee might produce what I was looking for.
Yeah, that went as well as could be expected. I’m just going to have to go back to New Zealand. Darn.
